The project is inspired by the Warung/Cafés as they can be found in Indonesia. Warungs are small shops or mobile food stalls offering simple dishes. In the entrance area, a green container with the inscription EVERGREENPEACE will be placed. With masts and sails it will create a place that, on one hand, can be seen as a poetic narrative of small business, and on the other hand will actually be a market and street stall. This form is a reference to the informal economic sector thanks to which people managed to survive independently of corruption and economic inequality found in all post colonial countries in the Global South.
The sails follow the design of Indonesian food banners and will be weaved using the traditional Indonesian weaving technique Tuban Gedog. The motives show local foods and agricultural scenes as well as images of historic events.
The masts to which the sails are attached remind us of Portuguese ships from the 15th century. »The entire design is meant to be a symbol of global trade, and of differentiation. However, at the same time, it illustrates the paradigm shift in trade, from the past until the opening of the Suez Canal and today’s global trade.« Moreover, this memorial initiates reflection on economic trade. In order to add some bustling to the installation of the container and carpets, performative activities such as cooking and sales events as well as discussions about cultural relations between nations will take place.
