To speak of decolonizing is to first reckon with the colonial. To acknowledge its continuity and its impact on the present and future. Lineage is an immersive, educational, and interactive installation that conveys the complex issues of decolonization through material and form. Constructed from Corten steel slabs, the material and form refers to the »ruler«, a line measure used by colonial powers to divide Africa. The form integrates with the existing architecture and environment, blurring the boundaries between art and space.
The monument is divided into four sections, History/Memory: an embedded floor section connecting the old and new buildings and descending down the stairs to the ground. Engraved on the embedded steel slabs are quotes from leading thinkers on decolonization, providing valuable historical context and awareness for the ongoing journey of decolonization. Resistance/Resilience: an elevated section, embodies the idea of renewal, rebirth, and not being trapped by history or the boundaries and limitations imposed by colonial powers. Rising approximately 8 m and then descending to the ground, it alludes to the violent and exploitative legacies of colonialism and the ongoing decolonization by those who resist. Awareness/Education: a QR code section, is embedded at the bottom of the elevated metal section. The code links the visitor to a digital platform on decolonization, creating a connection between the viewer and the artwork. Reconciliation/Healing: an illuminated section with an LED lighting system that draws attention to the work at night. It refers to healing, hope and reconciliation for those affected by colonial legacies.
