The Ghost Of A Memorial

wall installation with moving elements - 4th rank

Rebecca Korang & Jeremiah Ikongio, Germany
Material: plastics/ textile/ resin
Location: The installation frames the outer facade of the new building and the entrance area

The memorial consists of wall sculptures and AR models to be designed in a joint process with partners in the fields of art, culture and education from the seven regions affected by German colonialism. This includes: Ghana, Togo, Cameroon, Namibia, Tanzania, Papua New Guinea, and Germany. With groups of up to 10 participants in each region, 3D models for the wall sculptures and Augmented Reality experience will be created in three-day workshops.

The wall sculptures will be installed on individually manufactured panels and metal bars on the outer facade of the new building. The panels are designed in such a way that up to the height of a person’s hand they are turnable, enabling an interactivity with the objects. They are manufactured from recycled materials in a CNC milling process and supplemented with inscripted metal plates on the back. The contents will be developed in the workshops and can include symbols, figures or abstract concepts. In between, there are virtual models that can be viewed on smartphones or tablets. In this way, an audiovisual environment from shapes, texts and sound will be created.

»Following the exhibition of the Benin Bronzes in the British Museum, the panels that are woven by the workshop participants and the artists serve as a screen for collective narratives. They question the notion of historiography, the colonial practice of collecting and fortifying, and touch on the discourse of restitution.«
