EARTH CEREMONY 2026
On May 28th, we warmly invite you to the annual Earth Ceremony at the EarthNest — the decolonial memorial in front of Berlin Global Village.
🏺 The Earth Ceremony is a recurring ritual that keeps the EarthNest alive and continues its story. As part of the ceremony, soils from formerly colonized territories are added to the clay vessels in the underground section of the memorial. With each soil and the stories connected to it, the significance of the site continues to grow. Layer by layer, a collective space of remembrance emerges, connecting past, present, and future.
🗣️ Look forward to a multivocal program!
📅 When: May 28, 2026, doors open at 6:00 PM, program begins at 7:00 PM
📍 Where: Miriam Makeba Hall, Berlin Global Village, Am Sudhaus 2
PROGRAM
7:00 PM: ROUNDTABLE
with Jere Ikongio, Maimouna Ouattara & Billy Fowo
The Nest We Share – Art, Activism, and Civil Society in Dialogue
This roundtable brings together voices from art, activism, and NGO work to explore intersections, tensions, and solidaristic alliances. How can artistic strategies strengthen political movements? Where do artistic engagement, intervention, and concrete project work complement one another? And what kinds of acts of translation emerge when different fields of action come together? At the center is the search for meaningful bridges - between vision and implementation, between aesthetic reflection and structural change.
7:45 PM: POETIC INTERVENTION
with hn.lyonga, “There is a table in this house”
hn. lyonga is a writer and author who will present a performance titled “There is a table in this house” as part of the earth ceremony. The work understands itself as a choreographic reading and collective intervention that examines the ethics and politics of coming together - especially in times of rupture and uncertainty. Grounded in a practice of “neighbouring,” the performance brings together embodied presence, participatory installation, and communal dialogue. In this way, it creates a space of radical care, mutual witnessing, and political responsibility. At its center is a table: a place of sharing and encounter.
8:15 PM: EARTH CEREMONY
Offering of soils with MFA Kera (Madagascar), Mnyaka Sururu Mboro (Tanzania) & Israel Kaunatjike (Namibia)
MFA Kera, Mnyaka Sururu Mboro, and Israel Kaunatjike will speak about the soil they each brought for the EarthNest—its origins, its stories, and the political as well as personal meanings it carries. Different geographical and historical references thus come together in a shared space. As the soil is then passed around the circle, a temporary collective is formed before the soils are added to the EarthNest.
8:45 PM: VERNISSAGE & CLOSING
featuring works by Soukaina El Adak, Martha Díaz Adam, Juan Camilo Alfonso, Kervin Saint Pere, and Ọládayọ̀ Thomas
As part of an open call for creatives, artists and creatives were invited to submit works engaging with decolonial aesthetics. At the center of the resulting group exhibition, Gathering Otherwise - Diasporic Connections, is an exploration of diasporic identities - that is, lived realities shaped by migration and diverse cultural influences. The exhibition brings together works by Soukaina El Adak, Martha Díaz Adam, Juan Camilo Alfonso, Kervin Saint Pere, and Ọládayọ̀ Thomas. Through photography, painting, and textile works, the five artists approach the theme in different ways. Together, they open up a space for reflecting on one’s own positionings, belongings, and ruptures.
