US democracy is under massive pressure.Since Donald Trump's return to the White House as the 47th President of the United States of America two years ago, the local democratic structures have been exposed to a battle of attrition against authoritarian tendencies and state restructuring measures.
At the same time, the world's oldest modern democracy has so far proven its resilience. This is precisely why the upcoming midterm elections are so important.Poor poll numbers for the US President, international crises and US involvement in the Strait of Hormuz as well as ongoing discussions about President Trump's health are weakening the position of Republicans nationwide. The Democrats are hoping for a blue wave that will spill into the Senate and House of Representatives in November, thereby making the president a “lame duck.”
But how good are the chances for the Democrats? And what strategies are the Republicans pursuing in order to be able to hold key swing states and to set the course for a US presidential election in 2028 in a post-Trump era?
We also want to delve deeper into the difficulties that American democracy finds itself in.What role does money really play in American election campaigns? What state are the two major parties in the USA currently in?How can mechanisms like gerrymandering of constituencies be curbed and does a Democratic majority in either house really make a difference come November? And what do these developments in the USA mean directly and indirectly for us in Europe and Germany?
The project is funded by the Berlin State Center for Civic Education. We would like to thank you very much!
