Background
The world is already digitalized, yet its ecological, economic, and social development lags behind technological possibilities. Political progress depends on civil society initiatives that formulate and advance the necessary demands.
So far, Berlin has lacked a place where questions of digitalization can be addressed with a global perspective in a structured and solution-oriented way. The Digital Hub will fill this gap by bringing together a unique mix of actors to shape digitalization globally in a just and sustainable way.
What does the Digital Hub aim to achieve?
The Digital Hub at Berlin Global Village will be a space where development policy, migrant-diasporic, and North-South cooperation actors work together with those from the digital policy and net policy scene to develop new approaches and advocate for sustainable digitalization. Innovation here emerges through the interplay of diverse actors from practice, research, and activism.
With the Digital Hub at Berlin Global Village, goals such as equal access to global and local infrastructures, fair IT, democratization of global processes, climate and gender justice, and digital empowerment for the development policy and migrant-diasporic civil society will be actively pursued. In addition, exchange, networking, and co-creation with and through digital actors from the Global South will be established and strengthened, with knowledge transfer flowing in both directions.
Where is the Digital Hub located?
Above the rooftops of Berlin - right in the middle of the innovation area. The Digital Hub will be located in the currently unused attic of one of the buildings, with collaborative workspaces and state-of-the-art infrastructure for hybrid formats.
Our Cooperation Partners
Synergies arise through the already existing WeltRaum, a learning space with modern digital technology, and the Impact Hub on the Kindl site, which has already partnered with Berlin’s start-up scene. Black in Tech gUG, which advances the professionalization of Black people and People of Color, and Global Innovation Gathering e.V., which connects international networks and Berlin-based digital actors, will also contribute their long-standing expertise to the Digital Hub.
In addition, partnerships are being developed with actors in the education sector, such as Mediale Pfade e.V. , which implements projects using contemporary educational formats. The renowned Berlin university Alice Salomon Hochschule, in connection with the project Global We Media by Joliba e.V., will contribute expertise on critical digital media, while the Bamenda Film School in Cameroon will be an active ally through international collaboration.
Together, they will create a space to shape digitalization globally in a just and sustainable way.
